Communication System Inside Drone
Drones have traditionally communicated over a fragmented fieldbus approach borrowed from industrial factory floors - low-speed links such as I²C and SPI at the board level, RS-485 for point-to-point serial, and CAN or Modbus for multidrop control. These protocols span only tens of kbps to a few Mbps, speak mutually incompatible languages, and rely on bridges or gateways to tie sensors, motor controllers, and the flight processor to higher-level Ethernet backbones - adding system complexity, latency, heavier wiring harnesses, higher power draw, and more complex software that limits scalability. 10BASE-T1S single-pair Ethernet replaces that patchwork with one lightweight backbone: it carries native 10 Mb/s half-duplex Ethernet over a single unshielded twisted pair on a switchless multidrop bus, letting many nodes share the same physical medium. Using PLCA (Physical Layer Collision Avoidance), the network guarantees deterministic, collision-free access and predictable latency - ideal for real-time control and sensing - while a shared end-to-end IP network cuts harness weight and directly extends flight time.
onsemi brings this architecture to the aircraft with two compact 10BASE-T1S transceivers. The NCN26000 is a 10 Mb/s Ethernet PHY that pairs with any standard MAC, while the NCN26010 integrates both MAC and PHY with an Open Alliance MACPHY SPI host interface - together giving drone designers a flexible, low-power path to a unified single-pair Ethernet network from sensor to processor.
onsemi has since extended single-pair Ethernet onto the Treo platform with a new generation of 10BASE-T1S transceivers aimed at harsher, more distributed systems - adding in-network diagnostics and microcontroller-less nodes to the same PLCA multidrop backbone.

RSL15 - ultra-low-power Bluetooth LE connectivity
For wireless telemetry and short-range links, onsemi’s RSL15 is a secure Arm Cortex-M33 Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2 wireless MCU - the industry’s lowest-power flash-based secure BLE device. Built-in direction finding and nanoamp-class sleep currents let battery-powered drone nodes locate one another precisely and stay dormant between transmissions, extending flight and sensor runtime.
- Bluetooth LE 5.2 with Angle of Arrival (AoA) and Angle of Departure (AoD) for direction finding and localization
- Ultra-low standby power: ~36 nA sleep (GPIO wakeup) and ~81 nA (RTC timer wakeup) at 3 V
- Smart Sense mode keeps sensors and the ADC active at nanoamp-level system power (continuous ADC ≈ 186 nA)
- Long Range (Coded PHY), 2 Mbit high-speed PHY, and up to 10 simultaneous connections
- Secure by design with Arm TrustZone and CryptoCell-312, secure boot, and root of trust<
Signal Conditioning
onsemi rounds out the signal chain with a broad portfolio of operational amplifiers, current-sense and instrumentation amplifiers, high-speed comparators, and LDO regulators for conditioning sensor and telemetry signals - offering low offset voltage, low noise, high common-mode rejection, and low-quiescent-current options well suited to battery-powered designs. Its Treo analog and mixed-signal platform advances these devices for battery-specific applications: built on a 65 nm Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process, Treo combines bipolar precision, CMOS control, and DMOS power handling on a single die, spans the industry’s widest 1–90 V supply range, and drives lower quiescent current and smaller system size - so amplifiers, comparators, and LDOs deliver precise, efficient conditioning while maximizing battery life.
NCV7192 takes that conditioning right to the sensing element: it is a bridge signal conditioning interface that amplifies a resistive bridge’s differential output with programmable gain and offset, uses an integrated DSP to correct bridge nonlinearity and temperature drift, and reports the result as a digital SENT message or a ratiometric analog signal. A second channel measures an external NTC so medium temperature travels alongside the pressure or force reading, while on-chip EEPROM - programmable through the output pin - holds calibration coefficients and customer data. Built-in diagnostics and protection against shorts, overvoltage, and reverse voltage make it suitable for safety-related sensing such as pressure, load, and flow measurement across the aircraft.
