BLDC Motor Drive / Propellers System

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are the heart of a modern drone’s propulsion system, spinning each propeller with the high power density, efficiency, and precise control that flight demands. Every gram and every watt counts: the electronic speed controller must switch large phase currents at high frequency while dissipating as little energy as heat as possible, because thermal losses directly reduce flight time and payload capacity.

This is where onsemi’s PowerTrench MOSFETs make a real difference. Their low RDS(on) and low gate charge cut both conduction and switching losses, so the power stage runs cooler and more efficiently at the high frequencies drone speed controllers use. Dual Cool packaging adds top- and bottom-side cooling in a compact, industry-standard PQFN footprint, pulling heat out of the tight, weight-constrained motor-drive board without bulky heatsinks. Closing the loop, accurate position sensing gives the controller the rotor angle it needs for smooth, efficient commutation and precise thrust - essential for stable hover, agile maneuvers, and pinpoint landing.

Key onsemi products & families

  • PowerTrench T10 / T8 / T6 MOSFETs - Low- and mid-voltage power-stage MOSFETs in a compact 5 mm × 6 mm package; T10 delivers up to 2× lower gate charge and 30–40% lower RDS(on) vs. prior generations for cooler, higher-frequency switching.
  • Wide Bandgap - EliteSiC & GaNexus - As eVTOL propulsion moves to high-voltage battery buses and motor powers measured in tens of kilowatts, silicon reaches its limits and wide bandgap takes over. onsemi’s EliteSiC MOSFETs and modules bring low on-resistance, fast body-diode recovery, and high blocking voltage to the high-voltage propulsion inverter, cutting switching and conduction losses so the drive runs cooler with far less cooling mass - weight that converts directly into payload and flight time. GaNexus GaN devices serve the higher-frequency, lower-voltage end of the aircraft, where near-zero reverse-recovery charge and very fast switching shrink magnetics and filters in auxiliary drives and onboard power conversion. Together they let eVTOL designers push power density and efficiency well beyond a silicon design while holding the tight thermal, weight, and reliability budgets that certified flight hardware demands.
  • Dual Cool & Top Cool MOSFETs - Top- and bottom-side cooling in an industry-standard PQFN for the highest power density and lowest junction-to-ambient thermal resistance in the speed controller. Web / group parts include FDMS7650DC, FDMC86520DC, FDMS86300DC and FDMT800152DC across the Dual Cool 56 and 8×8 Dual Cool 88 families. PowerTrench Top Cool packages take the same idea further by exposing the drain pad on the top of the package, so heat is pulled straight up into a heatsink or chassis instead of through the PCB - a major advantage on the dense, double-sided ESC boards used in drones, where copper area and airflow are both scarce. Because the thermal path no longer competes with the electrical layout, designers can shrink the board, drop thermal vias and heavy copper pours, and run higher continuous phase current at the same junction temperature, keeping the motor-drive stage light, cool, and reliable through sustained high-thrust flight.
  • NCS32100 Inductive Position Sensor - 20-bit single-turn / 24-bit multi-turn angular sensing with a contactless PCB coil, delivering ±50 arcsec accuracy and up to 6,000 rpm at full accuracy (60,000 rpm at reduced accuracy) across a 2.7–5.5 V supply, for accurate rotor position and velocity that enable precise, efficient commutation.
  • NCD83591 3-Phase Gate Driver - 60 V multi-purpose BLDC gate driver with an embedded current-sense amplifier and charge pump, ideal for compact, low-BOM motor-drive designs.
  • eFuse (NIS3071 / NIS6150 / NIS6452) - An electronically resettable fuse that actively guards the motor-drive rail against overcurrent, inrush, short-circuit, and overvoltage faults. Instead of blowing and needing replacement, it trips to protect the MOSFETs and flight controller, then auto-retries and restores power once the fault clears - keeping the drone flying through transient events.

Getting the most from the drive stage means pairing the power MOSFETs with the right gate driver. The driver must charge and discharge the MOSFET gate quickly and cleanly at the PWM frequency, with enough drive current, controlled dead-time, and protection to prevent shoot-through and minimize switching losses. onsemi’s NCD83591 is a 60 V, three-phase gate driver built for exactly this: its configurable 5–250 mA constant-current drive, embedded charge pump, and current-sense amplifier pair directly with the PowerTrench and Dual Cool MOSFETs to deliver clean, well-controlled commutation in a compact, low-BOM design.

Accurate rotor position is critical for a BLDC motor: the controller has to know exactly where the rotor is to energize the right phases at the right instant. The NCS32100 gives that controller high-resolution absolute angle and velocity, enabling smooth field-oriented control, maximum torque per amp, and stable operation from standstill through high speed - which translates to steadier thrust, quieter motors, longer flight time, and the precise positioning drones need for stable hover and pinpoint landing.
