This reference design of the Driver Monitoring System (DMS), also referred to as a Driver Attention Monitor, is an advanced vehicle safety feature designed to assess driver alertness in real-time. Using in-cabin sensors and image processing, the system detects signs of drowsiness, distraction, or improper behavior such as using a mobile phone, and alerts the driver accordingly. In critical situations, the DMS can even trigger braking or other safety interventions. As part of the safety standards, Euro NCAP has mandated the inclusion of DMS in all new vehicle type approvals starting in 2022.
