The NCP1680 is a Critical Conduction Mode (CrM) Power Factor Correction (PFC) controller IC designed to drive the bridgeless totem-pole PFC topology.
A power factor correction architecture, the bridgeless totem-pole comprises a fast switching leg driven at the PWM switching frequency and a second leg that operates at the AC line frequency. The NCP1680 also has two field-effect transistors, the first in the low frequency diode leg and another in the boost converter.
In conventional PFC circuits, Bridge Diodes represent a major source of power loss due to a forward voltage. Replacing the Bridge Diode with a Totem Pole PFC topology achieves greater power stage efficiency and density. It also features an elegant 4 switch boost solution that reduces the number of components in the current path and eliminates the need for software coding. The NCP1680 is a compact and efficient PFC, ready for immediate use.
