Automotive TSN ECU

Description - 202510S1

Deterministic Networking with NXP S32K3 MCU

Prototype designs for next-generation automotive ECUs have become more accessible and powerful.

The Automotive TSN ECU solution, based on the NXP S32K3 Microcontroller Unit (MCU), is an integrated hardware and software platform designed to meet the demanding requirements of modern vehicle networks. It brings Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) capabilities to automotive applications, enabling deterministic, low-latency communication essential for zonal architectures and centralised computing.

This solution stands out by providing integrated hardware TSN acceleration, including a nanosecond-level timestamp engine and a traffic shaper supporting the 802.1Qbv standard. This ensures sub-microsecond time synchronisation (802.1AS/gPTP), safeguarding critical control data flows. The high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M7 core delivers the reliable real-time processing power required to run complex TSN protocol stacks alongside application tasks.

A key advantage of this solution is the single-chip integration of multiple automotive interfaces, including TSN Ethernet (MAC), multiple CAN FD, LIN, and FlexIO. This enables designers to create real-time gateways or bridges between new in-vehicle TSN Ethernet backbones and traditional vehicle buses like CAN FD, significantly simplifying system architecture.

Built on an automotive-grade foundation, the MCU is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified, incorporates a Hardware Security Engine (HSE), and supports ASIL-B/D functional safety. This provides the necessary reliability and security for in-vehicle networks. Development is accelerated by NXP S32K3 automotive software and development tools, including real-time drivers (AUTOSAR and non-AUTOSAR) and TSN protocol stacks.
