GPIO Expanders expand two wire I2C-bus to multiple input/output signals. The ultra-low voltage GPIO complements system management strategy toward the next-generation supply voltage standards to 0.8 V interface. With a wide range of selections from 4-bit to 40-bit as well as all kind of packages choices, NXP GPIOs are best in class. For example, there’s a new X2QFN super thin Land Grid Array (LGA) packages are 0.35 mm thick—the thickest GPIO package NXP has ever offered. Also, GPIO integrated level shift capabilities eliminate extra components by interfacing directly between next-generation CPU and older peripherals.
Port flexibility sets NXP GPIOs apart
One of the main features that sets NXP GPIOs apart are the flexibility of ports. GPIO output ports with software selectable output drive strength of 25, 50, 75 or 100% to improve rise and fall times along with a configured output which is either push-pull or open-drain. Plus, these ports offer noise reduction as well as match impedance. What’s more, GPIO input ports latch and save input transitions until processed by selecting floating input (high-impedance) or pull-up/pull-down resistor enablement and eliminates external resistors to reduce BOMs. Lastly, agile interrupt ports mask inputs from triggering interrupts, identify which input triggered an interrupt via I2C and reduce processor interrupt traffic to improve service response times.

NXP’s voltage level translators serve as an interface between different supply and input/output voltage levels. These bi-directional level shifter and translator circuits include a range from single-bit to 32-bit widths. Voltage level shifting between host processor’s I2C-bus and peripheral devices when there is a mismatch of supply voltages. Often VLTs are used when additional drive is needed or to isolate two sections of the bus loading.
