Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) aim to drastically reduce road accidents and the associated casualties by helping drivers avoid collisions altogether. These systems react faster than any human, are constantly vigilant, and are already being adopted and deployed across various car segments, from premium to economy models.

ADAS systems constantly monitor the vehicle surroundings, alert the driver of hazardous road conditions, and take corrective actions, such as slowing or stopping the vehicle. These systems use inputs from multiple sensors, such as cameras and radars. The fusion of these inputs is processed and the information is delivered to the driver and other parts of the system. The same sensor technologies can be used both in the current ADAS systems and in the upcoming fully autonomous driving systems (level 4 and 5).

Camera-based technologies provide high-reliability and adaptability for a wide-range of driver assistance applications, for example lane keeping, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, rear view camera, driver monitoring, electronic mirror. Radar-based ADAS uses two different carrier frequencies, 24 GHz for narrow band and 77 GHz for wide band applications, to support features such as blind-spot detection, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

The 32-bit SPC56-L automotive microcontrollers are a family of pin-to-pin compatible and scalable MCUs, operating up to 120MHz speed, and offering up to 2MB flash.

In particular, SPC56EL 32-bit MCUs are based on the Power Architecture core and are designed to cover a wide range of automotive applications that must meet ISO 26262 up to the most stringent ASIL-D level with a single MCU. The L5965 is a multiple voltage regulator including two battery compatible BUCK pre-regulators, two BUCK post regulators, one BOOST, one LDO and a precise voltage reference regulator.

OTP (One Time Programmable) cells are used for main device parameters and power up phase programming. An SPI interface can be used for diagnostic information and to program internal blocks parameters.

The device offers a set of features to support applications that need to fulfill functional safety requirements as defined by Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) A-B-C-D.

SPC58 C Line

The SPC58 Chorus C Line is part of our General-Purpose Automotive Power Architecture® MCUs. It is designed for body, networking and security applications such as secure onboard communication systems in connected vehicles.

The SPC58 Chorus C Line is offered in dual-core (SPC58EC) and single-core (SPC584C) versions with up to 4 Mbytes of Flash memory and it is to pin compatible with the other Chorus MCUs: SPC58 4B Line, SPC58 G Line and SPC58 H Line.

Designed in compliance with ISO 26262 specifications, the SPC58 C Line supports the ASIL-B safety standard as well as EVITA medium security level to secure on-board architecture and communication protocols such as Ethernet with Audio Video Bridging (AVB) capability.

Monolithic dual 3.5 A step-down switching regulator with LDO

L5964 is a dual step-down switching regulator with internal power switches and a low drop-out linear/standby regulator. All the regulators have independent supply voltages, enables, power goods and thermal protections. L9907 is a smart power device realized in STMicroelectronics advanced BCD-6s technology. It is able to drive all PowerMOS transistors for 3-phase BLDC motor applications. The circuit is suitable to operate in environments with high supply voltage such as double battery. Supply related pins are capable of withstanding up to 90 V. Moreover, the device is able to control the six pre-driver channels independently. In this way it is possible to implement all kinds of electric motor control strategy.

Motor Controller Toolkit

The SPC5-MCTK-01 Automotive Motor Controller Toolkit bundles combines both SPC560P automotive microcontroller the L9907 driver and is now available for purchase on the st.com website, together with the Field Oriented Control library (SPC5-MCTK-LIB) and monitoring tools. The kit includes a 24V, 64 Watt motor to simplify the set-up time.

Software is a key component of the platform and the library is designed for flexibility and ease of integration into multiple SPC5 automotive microcontroller platform. Today both automotive microcontrollers SPC560P and SPC56EL are supported.

The software package includes:

ST provides a large selection of Power Management ICs and System Basis Chips (SBC) specifically conceived to fit into automotive infotainment systems, clusters, USB hubs, electronic control units (ECU), and gateways as well as car body and door zone modules.

Silicon carbide MOSFETs

Based on the advanced and innovative properties of wide bandgap materials, ST’s 650 and 1700 V silicon-carbide (SiC) MOSFETs feature very low on-state resistance (RDS(on)) per area combined with excellent switching performance, translating into more efficient and compact systems. Compared with silicon MOSFETs, SiC MOSFETs exhibit low on-state resistance per area even at high temperatures as well as excellent switching performance versus the best-in-class IGBTs in all temperature ranges, simplifying the thermal design of power electronic systems.

Features and benefits of our silicon carbide MOSFETs include:

  • Very high temperature handling capability (max. TJ = 200 °C) leading to reduced PCB form factors (simplified thermal management) as well as improved system reliability
  • Significantly reduced switching losses (minimal variation versus temperature) resulting in more compact designs (with smaller passive components)

IGBTs

IGBT M series 650V for Aux power supply and traction inverter

Designed for applications working between 2 and 20 kHz in hard-switching circuit topologies, the 650 V IGBT M series delivers the best trade-off between conduction and switch-off losses. A minimum short-circuit withstand time of 6 µs at 150 °C starting junction temperature combined with a maximum operating junction temperature of 175 °C and a wide safe operating area (SOA) extend service lifetime and boost reliability in applications where high power dissipation is required. With a current rating ranging from 4 to 120 A, the devices are available in a wide selection of packages that include a new generation of free-wheeling diodes optimized for fast recovery while maintaining a low forward drop and a high level of softness.

The STGAP1AS is a galvanically isolated single gate driver for N-channel MOSFETs and IGBTs with advanced protection, configuration and diagnostic features. The architecture of the STGAP1AS isolates the channel from the control and the low voltage interface circuitry through true galvanic isolation. The gate driver is characterized by 5 A capability, making the device also suitable for high power inverter applications such as motor drivers in hybrid and electric vehicles and in industrial drives. The output driver section provides a rail-to-rail output with the possibility to use a negative gate driver supply. The input to output propagation delay results contained within 100 ns, providing high PWM control accuracy. Protection functions such as the Miller clamp, desaturation detection, dedicated sense pin for overcurrent detection, output 2-level turn-off, VCE overvoltage protection, UVLO and OVLO are included to easily design high reliability systems. Open drain diagnostic outputs are present and detailed device conditions can be monitored through the SPI. Each function's parameter can be programmed via the SPI, making the device very flexible and allowing it to fit in a wide range of applications. Separate sink and source outputs provide high flexibility and bill of material reduction for external components.
