Smart lighting and the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing at a rapid pace—and on the forefront of that connected future comes smart lighting.
To create a smart home, however, it takes more than just a smart bulb here or there. From controlling that smart bulb in a single room to every luminaire in a home network, an entire building, or even a city, there are many elements to intelligent lighting technology.
Luminaires, the light source, can be designed with intelligence and automation, incorporating the vast amounts of connected sensors that can sense ambient motion, CO2, temperature, humidity, fire or smoke to name a few. In a smart lighting solution, these luminaires are connected to a gateway wirelessly, through BLE, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, PoE, Thread, PLC or a different protocols, or through wire. These connections lay the infrastructure to communicate with and monitor the luminaire. This can be done through a phone, handheld device or web-based application where analytics can be used to optimize and monitor your system. Customers can execute day light harvesting, view occupancy patterns and oversee maintenance among other energy cost savings benefits.
