Wherever You Are- EBV IoT Solutions from NXP

RFID multi-applications without compromise

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology which enables the identification and authentication of objects and individuals along with data exchange between devices.

RFID is a key enabler for the Internet of Things. It is based upon wireless technology, with the advantage that there is no need for line of sight to communicate between a reader and a transponder. In addition it offers embedded memory which can be programmed by the user.

A specialized subset of RFID, NFC technology performs many of the same functions as RFID tags and contactless smartcards, while also adding peer-to-peer communications.

We use the latest techniques for protecting privacy, support a range of form factors, and enable smart, secure devices that offer the fastest transaction times. We’re known for our ability to drive technology, and consistently introduce new solutions that share the vision of our key partners across the value chain. Our commitment to RFID for the long term leads us to invest significantly in R&D, and drives us to be an active leading participant in standardization and regulation activities, like those of the GS1, ISO, and IEC.

NXP offers a full suite of RFID solutions across all frequencies.

Innovations provide secure connections for a smarter world

For markets ranging from retail to libraries and asset management to consumer packaged goods (CPG), NXP's RFID technology is already providing item identification, location and authentication information to improve business processes and increase the overall customer experience.

In its successful history, RFID products have established an excellent reputation and footprint as the leading contactless solution that delivers convenience, flexibility and scalability.

RFID solutions deliver the performance, speed and security it takes to improve business processes. RFID brings efficiency to supply chains and logistics operations, managing inventories and assets, and protecting products against counterfeit and theft.

RFID Enables:

  • Fast inventory scans with up to 20,000 items per hour
  • Let stores become pick up locations for online sales (omni-channel)
  • Automated status updates (sold, stolen,..)
  • Product Authentication
  • Tamper Detection
  • Electronic Seals

Inventory Management and Supply Chain Efficiency

One major benefit of the Internet of Things (IoT) is it enables companies and consumers to know the exact location of an item. The actual use cases of this application can be experienced every day when walking into a retail store. Where can a product be found? Is it available in this store, or in stock? Is it available in another store?

RFID based Inventory Management already answers these questions for many high profile fashion retailers, and it is beginning to appear in other retail markets such as food and fast moving consumer goods.

The technology is also used to identify several hundred million animals - pigs, sheep, goats, cows, deer, horses, fish and pigeons - by simply reading their tags at a distance. Thanks to the anti-collision technology, RFID readers can identify several animals simultaneously, improving automation and logistics, as well as reducing labour costs. Through improved traceability, RFID livestock management increases consumer protection from animal-borne diseases.

In addition RFID can automate manufacturing processes and boost efficiency. Storing data related to manufacturing processes directly into RFID chips allows users to integrate the technology into manufacturing steps, supporting more flexible and de-centralized production.

Brand Protection

Globalization has created vulnerabilities in the supply chain, and criminals have been quick to exploit these weaknesses. Across every economic sector, at every level of value – from high-end luxury goods to everyday items - counterfeiting and channel diversions are increasingly widespread issues, impacting even responsible companies. Counterfeit products mean lost revenue and harmed brand reputation for brand owners. What’s more, counterfeiting has serious economic and social consequences.

RFID offers a more comprehensive way to safeguard your brand products, because RFID supports a multi-pronged approach that includes authentication, track and trace, and tamper evidence. It thus provides an end-to-end transparency along the supply chain, ensuring brand owners their products are distributed and handled correctly. What really sets RFID apart, though, is that it can do what no other anti-counterfeiting technology can – create deeper, more meaningful relationships with your customers. So it not only protects bands, it adds value, too.

Consumer Interaction

The added advantage of RFID is that is goes beyond anti-counterfeiting functions to create deeper, more meaningful customer relationships. With RFID, you can interact with customers at every stage in their purchase journey.

Incorporating NFC and RFID technologies into marketing campaigns bridges the physical and online worlds. Using RFID is completely intuitive – a simple tap of a smartphone is all it takes to initiate all kinds of interactions enabling innovative ways to interact with consumers, encourage their curiosity, accelerate sales, and improve cross-selling opportunities.

Automatic Vehicle Identification

Systems for Automatic Vehcile Identification (AVI) have been around for many years. Inductive loops, image recognition solutions and active RFID have all been tried and deployed. However, in an application where reliable, cost effective and secure identification of vehicles in various traffic situations is essential, secure passive UHF proves to be absolute choice number one.

Integrated into the license plates or placed on the inside of the vehicle in the form of an electronic windshield label, long range RFID chips from NXP operate fully passively (without the need for any battery) and offer the highest standards of cryptographic authentication. And they still manage to enable a read range of more than 10 meters, as well as identifying vehicles travelling at more than 150 kilometers per hour.
