The LS1028A has functionality for Industry 4.0 including Time-Sensitive Networking (for deterministic Ethernet), high-performance Cortex®-A72 cores, 3D graphics for HMI and integrated security capabilities using NXP's Trust Architecture. The LS1028A is an SoC of the Layerscape family with integrated 3D GPU for HMI, and support for TSN in the integrated Ethernet switch and independent Ethernet controllers.

The family consists of 4 parts: LS1028A, LS1027A, LS1028A, and the LS1017A, with either 1 or 2 Cortex®-A72 and the option to include HMI capabilities with DP/eDP, LCD Controller, and 3D GPU.

Development Tools

The LS1028ARDB can help reduce time to market. The board supports most of the capabilities of the SoC and can serve as a reference for the customer’s hardware development. It can also be used as a debug tool to check behaviors seen on a customer board. Many developers use the reference design board for software development and performance evaluation prior to the completion of the final system design.

The LS1028ARDB supports two active m.2 slots that can support a combination of PCIe or SATA interfaces, a full-size SD card slot, two USB 3.0 ports, and a DisplayPort interface. In addition, there are 5 TSN-enabled Gb Ethernet ports that are connected to the 4 port Ethernet switch and independent Ethernet controller on the LS1028A.  The board is expandable with 2 mikroBUS™ sockets that can be used to add a variety of low-speed peripherals, such as GPS, NFC, BLE, ZigBee or Thread connectivity.

The LS1028ARDB is powered by NXP’s VR-series (MC34VR500V9ES) high-performance multi-output buck regulator. The VR500’s high-frequency operation coupled with high integration allows extremely small foot-print solution. The output voltages and power-up sequencing are programmed to power most of the LS1028A rails as well as DDR3L/DDR4 memory which reduces the development time significantly.

The LS1028ARDB is loaded with the Layerscape SDK. The SDK includes a 64-bit SMP Linux kernel, switchdev support for the integrated L2 switch, TSN configuration tools, U-boot, the GCC toolchain, and virtualization support.  In addition, developers can take advantage of Ubuntu precompiled packages for Arm processors, greatly reducing development time for advanced applications.
