USB type-C an ecosystem approaching perfection

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is undoubtedly the greatest interface ever invented. We only need to look around us to see its success as an innovation. Connecting everything from our computer peripherals to our mobile devices, it has become a technology we cannot do without.

The reasons for its rapid adoption is equally apparent. USB is easy to use, allows fast transmission, carries an independent power supply, and is a highly flexible connection that also hot swappable. Its advantages are unprecedented.

As a result of its popularity, a variety of connectors have emerged to allow connection with the fast growing number of devices, namely Type-A, Type-B, Mini-A, Mini-B, Micro-A and Micro-B. This has given rise to unexpected issues. For one, the different connectors mean different cables are required. Transmission rates—which have advanced up to 10Gbps in the USB 3.1 standard—are also connector dependent. There is also the issue of limited power supply as USB is now the primary means of charging our many power-hungry devices. On a lesser note, the irreversible nature of the connectors means they have to be plugged the right way to function. A design that proves to be frustrating many a times.

One new interface is born - USB Type C

With the introduction of USB Type-C by USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the issues we faced have become things of the past.

This newest generation of USB is easily identifiable by its small connector which features vertical symmetry for reversible insertion. But frustration-free connection is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to advantages. Transmission speed and power capabilities have been dramatically improved, putting unmatched functionalities in the hands of both engineers and users.
