As the IoT expands and more devices become connected, it is becoming increasingly apparent that IoT devices will likely operate not in a single wireless network, but instead across multiple wireless networks. The new Kinetis KW41Z MCU is the industry's first single-chip multi-protocol wireless MCU supporting both Bluetooth®low energy v4.2 and Thread mesh networking which runs on an 802.15.4 radio. The Kinetis KW41Z MCU comes loaded with memory – as much as 512KB Flash and 128KB SRAM. The extended memory allows multiple network stacks—BLE and Thread—to run on a single device, enabling developers to design true multi-protocol IoT devices. This multi-mode capability enables direct communication using BLE via a mobile device or tablet and communication in a mesh network for local and remote control/monitoring. With the Kinetis KW41Z MCU solution, the IoT solution becomes simpler to design, while yielding a more advanced user experience.
The Kinetis KW41Z MCU family supports true multi-protocol single-chip designs, capable of running two stacks concurrently, by integrating a 2.4 GHz transceiver that enables the use of BLE v4.2 and IEEE 802.15.4 (Thread).
Built on the ARM® Cortex® -M0+ core, with up to 512 KB of Flash and up to 128 KB of SRAM, ultra low-power radio and standby currents, highly-integrated connectivity, security and analog capabilities, make it the ideal solution for portable, battery powered applications.
There are three new devices in the Kinetis KW41Z MCU family that all have the same features and specifications, but support different radio protocols:
- Kinetis KW41Z MCUs supports BLE, BLE Mesh, IPv6 over BLE, Generic FSK and IEEE 802.15.4 (Thread)
- Kinetis KW31Z MCUs supports BLE, BLE Mesh, IPv6 over BLE and Generic FSK
- Kinetis KW21Z MCUs supports 802.15.4 MAC/PHY (Thread) and Simple MAC
Development / Software
Take advantage of the robust enablement package that includes the BLE host stack, generic FSK, Thread stack, 802.15.4 MAC and Simple MAC (SMAC) software protocol stacks, RTOS, development tools and IDEs. These tools are designed for use with Kinetis KW41Z/31Z/21Z MCUs and are fully integrated in the Kinetis software development kit (KSDK).
FRDM-KW41Z: Bluetooth Low Energy and IEEE 802.15.4

USB-KW41Z: Wireless Packet Sniffer – USB Dongle
The USB dongle can be used as a wireless sniffer to monitor the wireless communication packets in the targeted network. Simply connect to a PC and install the required monitoring software, as explained in the available quick start guide. Alternatively, the USB dongle can be used as a wireless node with an easy connection to a PC or other USB-enabled device.
