TDK presents the EPCOS LeaXield™ active leakage current filter
Aggregate earth leakage currents can often cause RCDs (residual current devices) to trip at their threshold. As a result, RCDs are either not usable or only with substantial additional outlay.
TDK presents the EPCOS LeaXield™ active leakage current filter, a novel electronic solution which facilitates a dramatic reduction of earth leakage currents. This enables the effective use of residual current devices (RCDs) and increases plant availability.
A complete drive system consists of an EMC input filter, the frequency converter and the motor. LeaXield is connected between the RCD and the EMC input filter, and feeds the leakage currents back to the source, preventing them from flowing through the RCD and tripping it unintentionally.
LeaXield is effective over a broad frequency range from 150 Hz to 30 kHz. The unfiltered leakage currents (red) are dramatically attenuated (green) when LeaXield is used. It effectively filters both stationary leakage currents ranging from 150 Hz to 1 kHz and variable leakage currents, which are typically between 1 kHz and 16 kHz. The latter are determined by the frequency of the converter. The earth leakage currents filtered by LeaXield (green) are significantly below the RCD tripping threshold (blue), thereby preventing unintentional tripping of the RCD.
Thanks to its compact dimensions, LeaXield is also ideal for retrofitting into existing systems. Furthermore, as no external voltage supply is necessary for operation, the installation costs are low.
