Which way to go? Wireless options for the Industrial IoT


With autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) already in production environments, wireless is increasingly becoming a topic that industrial engineers need to deal with. Many solutions, such as 4G cellular networks and IEEE 802.11 WLAN, have been driven by consumer and office needs, as opposed to being designed to meet industrial requirements. Additionally, the bandwidth for the upcoming 5G standard (which is seen as a key IIoT enabler) is currently being allocated.

Wireless, low-power asset tags are also a consideration - allowing items to be tracked from delivery to the factory door, through the full production process, and out the other side.

When it comes to antennae, innovative solutions are required that are both optimal in their radio functionality and able to withstand harsh environmental conditions. At their simplest this could be a single element antenna, possibly a chip-antenna or designed into a flexible printed circuit (FPC). Radio solutions that use multiple-input, multiple-output (MiMo) antennae are also becoming an essential element of wireless connectivity.
