Connectors for Industrial IoT
Although much of the focus of the Industrial IoT is on wireless and sensor technology, we shouldn’t overlook the added demands on connectors. Maintaining reliable wired connections will become increasingly difficult with the significant increase in power and data requirements and as new production environments demand increasingly adaptive approaches.
While advances in low power, reliable wireless and sensor technology are enabling the IIOT, we will still rely on wired connections to provide a solid foundation on which this new layer of innovation will depend.

Sensing at scale: The future of sensors in the Industrial IoT
Force, position, pressure and temperature sensors are widely used in industrial automation and control applications. And to enable the IIoT, these will be deployed in even greater numbers. Operating at such scale will require further restrictions in size, power consumption and reliability. It’s these factors that are driving much of the development in this area.
There’s also a trend towards digital output sensors, which provide easier-to-communicate data, straight from the source.

Which way to go? Wireless options for the Industrial IoT
With autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) already in production environments, wireless is increasingly becoming a topic that industrial engineers need to deal with. Many solutions, such as 4G cellular networks and IEEE 802.11 WLAN, have been driven by consumer and office needs, as opposed to being designed to meet industrial requirements. Additionally, the bandwidth for the upcoming 5G standard (which is seen as a key IIoT enabler) is currently being allocated.
Wireless, low-power asset tags are also a consideration - allowing items to be tracked from delivery to the factory door, through the full production process, and out the other side.
When it comes to antennae, innovative solutions are required that are both optimal in their radio functionality and able to withstand harsh environmental conditions. At their simplest this could be a single element antenna, possibly a chip-antenna or designed into a flexible printed circuit (FPC). Radio solutions that use multiple-input, multiple-output (MiMo) antennae are also becoming an essential element of wireless connectivity.
