Digital Synthesizers

Digital Synthesizer is a frequency generator used for producing an analog waveform -usually a sine wave- by generating a time-varying signal in digital form and then perform a digital to analog conversion. Direct Digital Synthesizer consists of a frequency reference, a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) and a digital to analog converter (DAC). Frequency reference clock provides a stable clock to the NCO and NCO generates desired output waveform-usually a sine wave- whose period is controlled by Frequency Control Register. The sampled, digital waveform is converted to an analog waveform by the DAC. Applications of Digital Synthesizer include sound synthesizer, mixer, modulators, etc. in communication systems.
