Digital Signal Processor is a special kind of microcontroller with a multi-architecture which allows sets of instructions to be performed in parallel. DSP products which are based on a number of different types of parallel architectures, such as the super Harvard Architecture, and are mainly used where real time signals need to be processed. Applications include video and audio processing as well as image manipulation. In recent years the FPGA has become a competitor to standard DSP devices due to the programmability of the FPGA.
