October 1, 2009 - Avnet Tech Games to Host First Virtual Competition - College Students Nationwide to Win Thousands of Dollars in Scholarship Money

Competition Prepares Students for Real-World Experiences, Potential Internships and Job Opportunities

PHOENIX -- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), a leading global technology distributor, has announced the expansion of the Avnet Tech Games to include virtual games that allow college students nationwide to participate. The first virtual games offer thousands of dollars in new scholarship money and three new competitions for the fall that will expand the breadth of the Avnet Tech Games, hosted each April. Additional virtual games will be held in the spring, leading up to the annual event to be held April 10, 2010, at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Ariz.

The Avnet Tech Games is an annual Arizona collegiate competition that challenges students to solve real-world problems with technology. Both the traditional competitive events of the Avnet Tech Games and the new virtual games require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem solving and technical skills. The virtual games will allow students to work in teams or independently, competing on a national level.

The fall virtual games include:

  • Android™ App Challenge - Students develop a Google Android™ App using Google's Android™ SDK and Open API.
  • Microsoft Design the Best Windows 7 Computer - Teams will design the best all-around Microsoft Windows™ 7 computer solution for a specific scenario.
  • Video Tech Spot - During this two-part game, students create a 30-second TV promotional spot and then market it to gain promotion for the Avnet Tech Games 2010.

"The virtual games give students the opportunity to compete on a year-round basis and expands the competition to a national level," said Teri Radosevich, vice president of Community Relations for Avnet, Inc. "Each student on the winning teams will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the added experience that can help in landing that all-important first job."

The Android™ App Challenge and the Video Tech Spot registration close on October 16th. The Microsoft Design the Best Windows 7 Computer registration closes on October 30th. Teams of one to three students may compete. Winning students may apply their scholarship to any accredited college in the U.S.
