PHOENIX -- Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), has been awarded the 2007 Environmental Education/Communication Award of Merit for its leadership in educating the electronics industry on the impact of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) laws. The award was presented to Avnet during Valley Forward's annual Environmental Excellence Awards gala on Saturday in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In July 2006 new international RoHS laws went into effect regarding the use of certain hazardous materials in products being shipped to European Union (EU) countries. Although the new laws would affect the electronics supply chain as a whole, the industry was not prepared to meet the EU's deadline.
The Avnet team used this opportunity to embark on a global campaign to educate the technology community on how to manage RoHS-related issues. "At Avnet, we take our responsibility as environmental stewards very seriously and recognize the profound impact that the high-tech electronics supply chain has, not only on today's environment, but on tomorrow's world. We felt it was important to use the knowledge we had to help educate our customers and suppliers so they were better prepared to meet the RoHS environmental directive," said Jim Smith, president of Avnet logistics. "We hope the information we provided was beneficial to the industry and helped everyone understand, prepare for, and comply with these new and necessary requirements."
In addition to receiving the Environmental Education/Communication Award of Merit for its efforts, many suppliers and customers have developed strategies to help them comply with regulations. Industry organizations, such as the National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA), have also called upon distributors to adopt and support many of the best practices that Avnet suggested in its educational campaign.
